Solar cells, food, and water
Hi, I am Defne Apul
My mission is to improve the human and ecological well being through better design of engineered systems.

I focus on the design and modeling of infrastructures that provide humans' basic needs like water, food, energy, shelter, and social cohesion. I suggest ways to reduce the footprint (environmental impacts) and increase the handprint (environmental benefits) of these services. I am particularly interested in decentralized approaches (e.g. rainwater harvesting, urban agriculture, solar energy). Some amazing students and collaborators make all this possible.

My other interests are personal effectiveness, mentoring, and pedagogical scholarship focusing on sustainability and team based learning.

Join me on the quest for improving human and ecological well being through engineering analysis and design.
