My project is based on the TES-LCA methodology by Liu and Bakshi in 2018. In it, their model is to do what conventional LCA could not, compare the emissions produced by systems such as agriculture and manufacturing to how much their surrounding environment can remove of it.
My project involves the American diet, where I plan to model the emissions from agricultural system we use to produce the fruits and vegetables we most prominently eat. In addition, I will be modeling the ecosystem services that the environmental has that can remove such emissions. Ecosystem services are defined as general things nature does to remedy our pollution, such as water remediation, climate regulation for carbon dioxide emissions, and air quality for pollutants such as carbon monoxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and so on.
The project will be very general, and will use the entirety of America to model. As a result, the results are expected to be less severe as one would expect in the real world, where most of our food is produced in certain regions of America or imported.
In the month I have been at ICTA modeling this project, I have made a lot of progress. I plan to spend my remaining time here just writing my report, and getting feedback from the advisors here!
